Renting titles on Mac viewing on other devices

If I wanted to rent a movie on my iMac, but then either want to watch on my iPad or (latest gen) Apple TV, how would I go about that?

It seems that in the 24 hour viewing period, one should be able to watch the movie on any iOS device (or ATV). Can this actually be done?

In iTunes under "Rentals" in the left pane you can transfer the movie.
