I have a MBP... is there a replacement internal drive available that will recognize HD or Blu-Ray?
There are drives, I don't know if they fit in the MBP. But software is the biggest issue right now. Unless you plan to use Win, which is unfortunate.
Just throwing it out there but will Toast 8 work?

FastMac is currently selling this drive, which they list as compatible with the 17" MacBook Pro. However, they're asking $899.95 for it, which seems crazy to me for something that will possibly be obsolete in a year (or less.) Your best bet would be a external, stand-alone drive so that if HD-DVD wins, you aren't stuck with a dead-format drive in your MacBook Pro.

I don't think that will work for you but I was more interested in showing the software because of the previous comment.
$699 for a drive which writes 50GB onto a disc. Definitely pricey right now but they are backordered so someone is buying them I guess.
