Repair iPhone 3G

Hi folks,

I had a bit of a disaster tonight. I dropped the iPhone from a substantial height directly on the asphalt. So now the front chrome plating is badly scratched on both lower corners. But if this was all that had happened, I would not have cared as much. In addition, the left side of the iPhone where the volume and ringer on/off buttons appears to have developed a gap and cannot be pushed in... At the top where the earphone socket is now cracked.

I called Apple and they told me that the warranty is gone by a few days so there is nothing they can do. Repair is costly, about $199. So that is not really an option. So what I'd like to ask was this -- is there a good online site that can do the repair at a reasonable rate? I found this site -- http://www.rapidrepair.com -- does anyone have experience with them or can recommend another site?

Um, I'm afraid that "you damaged" the phone is not covered under warranty.

I recommend paying Apple up. They will handle it the Apple way (the best way possible when it comes to iPhone repair). Well to be honest, they won't repair it. They will just give you a new phone and thats it.

I'd also pay the $199 to get a "new" phone or just live with the phone as is. The OP didn't say anything about it not working properly, so just live with the scratches and gaps until something really goes wrong.

I'll second the "Let Apple replace it, get a new one, or live with it." The 3G is relatively simple to repair if you know what you're doing, but if you don't, you're far better off allowing a professional to do it for you. Or just getting a new phone. Or living with the damage.

I'm prolly going to sell it and get the 3GS. A perfect excuse, as it were.
