I bought a new OWC 10TB external hard drive. I attempted to partition the drive. I was using Disk Utility in High Sierra.

I constantly received an error message saying that the partitioning had failed.

The messages were either “partition split error” or messages ending with “try again later” to the best of my recollection.

This last attempt resulted in the same “partition split error” again. I hit “done” and the incomplete partition pie was still there. I sized the remaining partitions and hit “apply” again. The partitioning resumed and then successfully completed.

My question is whether I can safely use the repaired partition installation or should I keep trying to get a clean partition installation without having to apply any fixes.

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried to put a file on each partition you created to test whether or not those files will open?

Your concern, presumably, is that a partition will fail in some way. Or, are you concerned that the drive will spontaneously "unpartition" itself?

I was able to open a file uploaded to every partition. I had not thought of that. Thanks.

My concerns are those that you mentioned and any that I have not thought of. As this has never happened when I have previously partitioned external hard drives, I have no idea what problems might arise. I just worry because it was not a smooth install. I am hoping that yours and the forum community's cumulative experience might provide the guidance that either moves me to work with this installation or continue trying to get a clean partitioning.
