I have a late-2009 iMac running 10.13.6. In the last couple of days I've been driven insane by the letter "s". Typing it, I either get nothing; or a hundred "s"s repeating at a hundred miles an hour (I'm getting single repeats while typing this); and, when typing into a search engine (for example), the "s" appears with symbols above it.

When the problem occurs, the Keyboard Viewer shows the letter "s" greyed, as in apparently stuck.

The problem started with my Mac wireless keyboard. I switched to a Logitech wireless. The same problem arises, and the Keyboard Viewer shows the same thing. I had a Mac wireless mouse that was occasionally misbehaving. I don't know what impact, if any, the mouse might have had, but switching to my back-up didn't help.

I have set Key Repeat to off in System Prefs>Keyboard, I have reset PRAM, etc. The problem disappears after a reboot but reappears again.

Thank you kindly for any suggestions.

Oh well, I seem to have solved the problem, at least for the moment. I deactivated accented characters via Terminal. We shall see.
