Am I crazy to think about replacing my 2018 13.3 MBP with a 11" iPad Pro M1?

I don't do heavy photo/video editing. I mostly use my MBP as an every day internet surfer, email, word/excel/powerpoint. I also use Zwift with my SmartTrainer.

I'm thinking I could do all of this with the iPad Pro, but not sure I need to go with a 12.9 inch. I would tend to think that the larger size would be a bit awkward to hold as a tablet for normal reading.

Anyone want want to talk me into/out of switching to a 11" iPad Pro M1?

The 11" iPad Pro will beat your MacBook Pro. I encourage you to switch.

Well, you are in the iPad forum. Majority will encourage you to make the switch... I for one, would definitely do so. But according to your daily activities with the MBP, the 11" iPad Pro can handle it.

I have a MBP (2017) 13" and an IPP (2020) 12.9" and I never use my MBP. The only thing the MBP supports that the IPP does not (for me) is multiple screen support (native extended not black lined mirrored).

I am a GSuite/films/video calls/surfing/sketching type consumer - not a heavy video/photo editor. The AMK is a must - factor that into your costs.

Your usage seems a lot like mine. Were you tempted to go for the 11" vs the 12.9" I'm wondering if the drop in screensize is going to be significant.

You may find the 11" to be a little small for a laptop replacement. A common philosophy that I've heard lately is 'if you want a laptop that can sometimes be used as a tablet, go with the 12.9". If you want a tablet that can sometimes be used as a laptop, go with the 11".'

I still can't decide between the two for the 2021 models since I don't know if I want to own the new MBP simultaneously with the 11" or just replace the MBP's role altogether with the 12.9".

I would have gone for the 11" if it was not for work i.e I needed to use for a whole day. I actually thought the 12.9" would be too big, now I am glad I got the 12.9" - can't see me going smaller again now.

iPad as laptop replacement... wasn’t there a longer discussion on this somewhere...?

Usual answer: order one, try it, return it if it doesn’t work out for you.

Which is why I feel that the 11" is a better option for someone who isn't a creative/ content creator. The iPad is a better tablet than it is a laptop.

Did I see Excel and Word?

It's best to imagine how you would use iPad Pro with excel. How are you going type the numbers, move the cursor to edit.

And note that Word on iPadOS does not have all the features of Word on MacOS.

The MBP is more capable so I don't see why you should switch to the limited iPadOS.

How heavy is your use of the MS suite? Have you tried the iWork suite?

I agree with this. I have a 12.9 2018 IPP that was my primary personal machine. My work MBP had to do 99% of my excel (not heavy) work for the same reason
