I have an iPad Pro 10.5. The lightening port has officially become unusable. With the tape trick, I can get it to charge if I can position the cable in exactly the right position- without the tape it is too loose to work at all. The timing is unfortunate with the new iPad Pros on the horizon. I'd like to wait since I keep these a long time before upgrading, but I use it a lot, every day, and I'm essentially trying not to use it because of the lightning port issue. I also have a trip coming up at the end of this month and I tend to rely on it heavily for entertainment when flying. If I upgrade today, I'd go with either the iPad Pro 11 or the new iPad Air. Screen brightness is important to me, so that is a nod to the Pro. I've got about 80GB of my current 256GB free, so storage might be a consideration or it might not be- it could depend on whether the iPadOS 16 needs a lot more space.

Eeh, that situation sucks.

iPadOS 16 doesn't really use any more space than 15, so don't worry about that.

Right now you can get some deals on the 11" Pro, and they'll continue for a bit.

If you can, I'd say wait until next Wednesday and see if the new models drop. If not, it'll be October at the earliest, and you can decide whether you can wait until then or buy something this month.

The M1 iPad Pro 11 is a fantastic machine, if the 10.5 has suited your needs fine so far, the M1 chip is more then enough, its still overkill for the iPads. The 11" has a brighter screen, double the ram, much faster storage and the M1 chip is a huge upgrade over the A10x.

I wouldn't hesitate to upgrade to the 11" pro, I absolutely love mine

I can relate. My iPad Pro 10.5 has a power button that’s totally mashed in flat to the body. Hence I have to use assistive touch for things like power and screen caps etc. Like you, I keep the things for a long time (5 years about), and I use it a lot, as in it’s my primary device. No laptop. I would wait for the M2. Which is soo close at ths point. I’ll probably order it on day one. I know it’s inconvenient. But again… it’s probably right around the corner.

Forget the air, tid button, only 2 speakers v 4, 64gb base. Pro is 600 v 500 nits. Bit better camera and usb 4 support,
pro motion, LiDAR Scanner.
11" M1 is the best iPad and size so far imo.

My Pro 10.5 is working great but one of the three keyboard contacts somehow got pushed in and now my keyboard doesn’t work. :( But I’m going to keep it as long as the rest of it is still good so I get the latest hardware when I upgrade.

That sucks, but even though the current 11” Pro is just basically awesome, as I have one :), you will be kicking yourself if you don’t wait for the new models in October, one more month, just hold out, it’ll be worth it.

It depends. If you buy now you might get $50 or $70 off of the retail price which is an okay discount but not great. In a week or two Apple should announce a new Ipad Pro with M2 and a redesign if rumors are true. The redesign will most likely include new colors, a glass back and wireless charging. The price might stay the same or go up by around $100 on the base model and respectively throughout the line.

So the question becomes buy now and save a few bucks or wait just a short while and see if the pricing changes and if you like the redesign if it happens? Do you want the M2 which is fairly certain as it will certainly give better performance and graphics?

Personally I hate buying a model right before there is a major redesign unless I really like the older design and want to save money.

I think if you wait you have nothing to lose because the sales on the current model should most likely only get better and Apple might/might even lower the price or keep it the same and as I said have a higher base price on the newer model which is most likely and then you can make an informed choice based on facts if the newer model is worth the price and features.

I personally am in a similar position and will wait before I consider a pro. I currently have an air on order which should be delivered in a week or two and the new pro should be announced by then. I will then either just keep the air or pony up the extra cash for the new model if I really think the extra cost is worth it.

Good luck whatever you decide!!

I’m in the same board kinda. I have a 10.5 iPad Pro but randomly it’s rebooting, battery suddenly drops, power button issue, screen doesn’t always respond etc.

Have you considered picking up a used iPad Pro M1? Some good deals about at the moment on second hand if you need right now.

I’m personally waiting and then hoping M2 iPad Pro launch means the used prices of M1 drop, so I can get 1TB with cellular and the extra RAM at a good price.

I tried to wait, but the tape trick basically stopped working, so yesterday I bought a 256GB iPad Pro 11 (2021) from bhphoto for $999 and paid the $16 to get it shipped by today. After lots of tweaking with tape and cable, I got the old 10.5 Pro charged back up to 30%. I'm hoping that is enough to wipe and reset it. I'm committed to keeping it 2 years regardless of what new features come out in the meantime. The other final straws were that my Kindle is failing at the same time- and I have Covid, and so am isolating- I need something to entertain myself and my iPhone screen is too small for reading.
