I currently have an oct core 2x2.8Ghz Mac Pro 3,1 and have the opportunity to replace it with a quad core 2.6Ghz Mac Pro 4,1.

I'm wanting advice on which would be the superior computer.. thanks!

Unless you hack the 4,1 to 5,1 and replace the stock CPU with the hex, there won´t be much gain in a switch.
I´ve been thinking about the same, but these machines are so expensive in Denmark... Maybe next year, if I can find a DP 4,1 in the area around 2K

Mac Pro

Wait for the new Mac Pro due out soon. Can be seen on Apple Website. Great specifications and design. Price should be less than current model.
Looks like a real winner with it's performance and smaller tubular size.

I will be updating to the last MP or the one before it (don't know the numbers off the top of my head). From what I have been reading it sounds like the new MP is going to be expensive. I am in the same boat. I have a 3.1 MP 2.8.

Stating use of MP with apps will give viewers a better idea of 3.1 vs 4.1 vs
5.1 vs 6.1.

And that was said with sincere neutrality!:p

Yeah, tru-dat.

The OP's Q is answered only by understanding what he uses the machine for. For some things the MP3,1 will be better and at other things the MP4,1 will be better.

Where good mac pros go to die!

Its the elephant bone yard of Pros!

Surfheart, we really need to know what you use the computer for, because as paper weights or eye candy, they both have equal utility.

Also, we need to know, which specific area of your current machine you find lacking.

To be able to ascertain whether the switch is worthwhile, we also need to know how much you'd need to pay for the 4,1.

We're here to help you, but you need to give us some details.

RGDS,

There is one Mac Pro in that pile.

Click on the thumbnail to enlarge, and see if you can find it.....

You are right, top of closest row second from the right.

Although it might have been easier if the Mac Pro was wearing blue pants with a red and white stripped shirt like Waldo.
