hey all, it was successful, replaced the clips applied thermal paste, rebooted got a red light on my processor, so i took heatsink off again, appled more thermal paste to my processor, even though i upgraded it 2 days ago. put the heatsink back on and no more light.

Has it affected your temperatures at all? Were you just doing this preventatively, in case a clip broke and things overheated?

I don't think change the rivet will help cooling. But because must re-do the thermal paste, this may help a bit.

Anyway, for single processor cMP. Northbridge temperature should not be an issue as long as the heatsink is free from dust.

I just just a clean up yesterday. It gives me an almost 10C drop.

IMO, keep it clean is the key. And no need to touch the rivet unless it breaks.

Colin, how did you get the two clips out. My Mac Pro started overheating and the Northbridge heatsink is loose. I got in new clips for it. Did you just pull up with a pair of needle nose pliers?

You can't just pull them out from that side. You might do some damage. You need to squeeze the nipple on the clip from the underside to release, if that makes sense.

LOL. Unfortunately it makes perfect sense. Have my grandson this weekend. I'll work on it in a couple of days. Thanks for your help. I really didn't want to take the mother board off but it is what is it.

Or clip the underside off with diagonal wire cutters.

I do have another question. Will the new clips stay in once I place them or will I have to heat/melt the ends to secure that the heatsink remains positioned?

The arrow like end of the plastic rivet will open and stay in place locking the heatsink.
