Replace Samsung 1Tb drive in mid 2010 27" iMac

Been searching for an answer on this but can't find anybody with the same drive that my iMac arrived with.

I have a mid 27" iMac ( 11,3 ) that came factory fitted with a Samsung 1Tb HD103SJ

If I were to replace this myself can I just put in a larger 2Tb Sammy. All the references on the net just give advice on Seagate, WD & Hitachi but a quite a few iMacs were also shipped with Samsung. So many in fact that Apple actually issued a HDD firmware update for the drive. All the photos on the net describing the thermal sensor cable for each drive manufacturer just list Seagate, WD & Hitachi.

Anybody done this?

Can't say I have.

Best to call an Apple Authorized Service Provider and ask them. Apple Retail Stores don't do upgrades like that (at least the 2 Apple Stores in my city don't, just minor ones, like RAM) so they are the ones who do the upgrades primarily.

I know if you want to change your drive manufacturer on the 09/10 iMacs, they can sell you the proper cable for your new drive manufacturer. So I'm pretty sure they'll have the right one for your new drive, or at least, can order it in for you.

Haven't even seen a temperature sensor for Samsung drives. You can replace your Samsung with a 2TB WD or Seagate*, just purchase a sensor from www.applecomponents.com for the appropriate manufacturer to go along with it.

Not that a new Samsung drive won't work with the old sensor, but you're definitely taking a risk if you haven't seen anyone else do it yet, as not all hard drives from a manufacturer are compatible with the apple sensors.

*Note: Seagate sensors require alteration to use with non-factory drives, so WD is our recommendation.

If you don't get a temp cable you can use HDD Fan Control to get the HDD Fan to run at the correct speed using SMART instead of the cable reading, its what MacWorld used when they changed a drive article here. I use it too, works well.
