I just got my iphone replaced because I kept getting a 1603 error.

At the Apple store, the "genius" put my SIM into the new iPhone. And then I hooked it up to their laptop to activate it. It took me to the setup screen that you get when you first get an iPhone...asking me for my mobile, zip, and last 4 of my SSN. He said you weren't suppose to get this screen and that I shouldn't do it because I might get billed twice. He suggested I go to an AT&T store and let them know because my SIM might be corrupt. I told him it worked in my razr earlier. And then he said I shouldn't do that.

So anyways...I left and am wondering what the process is when you replace your original iPhone. Should you be able to put your SIM in there and iTunes will pick it up and just make you sync it? or do you have to do the activation again? If so, do you get the same screen I got that asks for phone #, zip, and last 4 of SSN??

Thanks

I feel stupid since I just replaced my phone Sunday and I can't remember what happened. They gave me a new phone. Can't remember if they swapped sims but I don't think it matters really. I took it home, hooked it up to my computer and followed the prompts and then syched everything back up.

why they tried to activate it in the store is beyond me since all your info is on your computer. That just doesn't make sense. i wouldn't worry about entering SS number again since you are entering the same exact mobile number you are replacing.

good luck

Ok...I just got home and all I did was plugged into my laptop. It then asked me if I wanted to use the last backup of my iphone. So I picked it. Then it was verifying my information with AT&T. So I didn't have to enter any information. I guess it asked me this at the Apple store because I didn't have my iphone/SIM connected to that particular computer.

My iphone is syncing now. I have a damn 7 screen. I used to have a 5. :(

Yeah same here but I keep telling myself that I rather have a working 7 series than a broken 5.

Damn I miss my 5 series.

I had the exact same thing happen at an Apple store.

The genius at the apple store called AT&T, who said to continue with the activation like it was a new account. They said I wouldn't get charged twice. Then, when I got home, I just re-sync'd my iphone with my itunes and was golden.

gwass - So when you got home, you just hooked the new phone with the old SIM to iTunes and didn't need to activate anything - the screen just acted like you plugged it in to sync?

This is odd. LOL I wonder why people get differing screens/results with swapping SIMs.

Semper - basically if you are happy with your screen and see no defects, I suggest ignoreing the whole thing and be happy. :)

All the genius had to do was reassociate your sims card with the imei of the new phone and you wouldn't have gotten that new activation screen. I explained what needed to be done to my new iPhone and the genius had a manager show him how to reassociate my sim. Took about 2 minutes and I was all set. He even connected it to itunes and reactivated my new phone for me.
