replacement 27": options

hey there,

i've done the circles with apple in getting my i7 27" repaired (4 screens each with a problem, one was even dead on arrival!) and they have finally accepted it as an issue (but they claim its not hardware related so i cant get a refund) but they are offering me a replacement machine, as i dont want another 27" (after all the issues with this one (the technician said he had never seen so many problems in one (in fact every component except the ram .etc has been replaced) and issues with other 27"s i have encountered) apple are happy to look at other options for a replacement, so im considering these;

15" i5 MacBook Pro w/ high-res screen & 7200rpm HDD / 21.5 iMac i5 w/ 8gb of RAM
or
i5 (quad) 27" with 8gb of RAM (least desireable)

i use the machine for adobe cs5, game development in unity and running games natively on steam and quite often have multiple applications open. im after a machine that will stay cool and be quite responsive (i dont mind waiting a couple of seconds, but a huge bout of lag will be a pain). if i go the path of the MBP I will want to hook it up to an external screen for some work how will this cope?

based on this, what is your opinion of what I should do? (I can only wait a few more days before contacting Apple, I was holding out for the back to mac event to see if they pimped out the MBP line but that fell through)
 
Okay, so you're fed up with the 27" model due to screen issues and hardware related problems.

You want to use the Mac for photoshop, game development and run multiple applications with ease. More importantly, you want it to stay cool.
That's where the 15" MacBook Pro looses its points. The MacBook Pro is a great machine but it's known for it's burn issues on your legs or otherwise translated to overheating.:)

The iMac 21.5" has the least problems with heating issues. The i5 on the iMacs have a little better performance than the Macbook i5, something to consider thinking about.

If you're considering photoshop and game development, a big screen can be desireable. Therefore, the credits go to the 27" for this one.

Another thing you should be thinking about is the fact that the MacBook Pro has been updated in March 2010. So that one ain't recent no more and it's about to be the first of the Mac's to be updated (especially out of you little list).
Hooking it up to an external monitor won't be a problem, though. I've had that setup for a while and it worked like a charm. No performance loss there.

I'd go with the 27" due to the screen real estate but if you have bad experiences with a few units of the particular model, I'd say 21/5"

The MacBook is just at 3/4 of its product lifecycle and has overheating problems. And you need to get a screen as well (which doesn't come cheap). A laptop is just not the way to go for home computing.

Those are my thoughts ;)

I request a Mac Pro, I doubt they would do a 1 to 1 swap but I think that would be the solution for your needs. You could bring up the point that because you have endured so many problems and lost production you qualify for a significant discount on it. As long as you are polite and firm you have nothing to lose, all they could say is no at this point.
 
Yeah, I've heard a bit about the 15"s suffering from overheating, then I hear the exact opposite and that they run fine! I went into the apple store and had a fondle of the 15", it was just running the demo movie and it was pretty toasty for a idling machine, the same model in JB Hi-Fi was cool to the touch, with the 17" powering a 27" cinema display even cooler! (I was touching either side of the track pad).

The close-ness to an upgrade of the MBP series is also putting me off, I'm going from a high-spec machine to something considerably lower and don't want the next iteration to noticeably close the gap between the two. Although the portability is desirable (I'm in my final 2 semesters of my degree). Chances are I might get a job in a different state or even country so the portability is a big plus.

A Mac Pro would be nice, but that might feel a little close to too much computer for me, especially once the added cost of a screen is added on...

Express frustrations calmy, state that you are a usual promoter of apple and frankly are truly dissapointed in the product. Say you have spend hours and hours and to compensate for lost time and your frustration you would like to switch to a similar machine. Pick a 2010 2.93 i7 imac stock(upgrade ram later) get the 2 TB hd and free applecare.

i want to move away from the 27" family though!

i have friends who have issues with theirs, plus after all the issues i've had with this one i just dont want a 27" around.

It's quite easy then isn't it? The 27" has just been deleted from your list.
Don't think about if you just don't want it.

The 21,5" is the way to go with the i5. No heating issues or any other particular problem. They've been updated in august so, go and get one today.

true! i might enquire if i can get a mac pro first though, failing that the i5 seems to be the best way to go...

its a shame that the MBPs are having so many problems, they would be ideal for me.
