After five days waiting, Apple got me two replacement APPs (stolen, lost, I still don’t know). Didn’t take my case with me to pick them up so did not find out until later that they would not pair with my phone. Well, they would, but only one by one. After a wasted hour chatting online and then considerable time in the Apple store, it became clear they had different firmware. I only had limited time so I left the store thinking I knew what I had to do. I cannot get the 2B576 bud to update to 2B584 so it matches the other one. So they are still just single AirPods right now. And I think there is new firmware out anyway. 2B588?

Yes 2B588 is the latest firmware. The firmware should upgrade within the hour if you keep your pods in the case, connected to power and your phone close by

Ditto for me! See this thread:

On instructions from Apple's Senior specialist, I tried to update the firmware individually on each of the buds. Didnt work.
What worked or at least I think it worked is --> I connected each earbuds seperatley to my phone at the same time!! so the phone was showing I had two APPs connected.
Then I put them both back in the case. and voila both updated to 588 firmware.

Done a lot of this and no change in 36 hours

I’m going through the same thing right now. I got mine replaced at the store yesterday. The rep said they would be fixed after half an hour of them being plugged in. They’ve been plugged in for hours and no change. Anyone else have this issue. Apple Support has been beyond worthless.
