Replacement dvd/cd drive

Hey Guys, I have g5 dual 2.0 desktop, bought it back 2004. Last night i could not get a cd out of the drive. Searched on here and tried everything i read, rebooted, used programs like toast and itunes with eject buttons. Still nothing. The disk still plays, i just can get the tray to open. I moved the face plate down and push the button on the drive, still nothing. So i am thinking i need a new combo drive.

Here is my question, This is the model SONY DVD RW DW-U10A I did a search on them, but i get a ton of stuff. Can anyone help me find this drive or a similar drive that will fix. I don't want to buy something and have it not fit. What is a good site for mac stuff?

Shut down the computer, remove the drive from the chassis (instructions) and use a paperclip in the manual eject hole at the front of the drive.

It is potentially just that the mechanism is jammed (did the disc have an adhesive label?)

As for replacement drives -- I stuck a Samsung SH-S182M into the lower bay of my MacPro and have been extremely happy with its performance -- they're $30 at NewEgg.

The SH-S183L is an SATA drive, and therefore isn't compatible with the stock ATAPI/IDE interface in the optical bay. If you have an additional SATA controller PCI card installed, you can use it (the hard drive SATA interfaces won't reach the optical bay).

The SH-S182D is a non-lightscribe version of the SH-S182M either will work in your optical bay, on the ATAPI/IDE chain.

EDIT: I had the wrong model suffix -- the correct drive is now in bold.

Well this seemed to work. I was able to get the cd out and then the bay opened and closed with out a problem. I will keep an eye on it.

mustang is saying that the drive you're looking at requires SATA (small plug) vs the standard IDE (big, wide, plug with ribbon cable, also called 'ATAPI').

Therefore, you would need to buy a SATA cable (cheap) and feed it through the mac pro's case to the SATA ports under the 'front fan assembly'.

Keep in mind that those SATA ports you'd be using will not be detected in windows if you run bootcamp.

If you're skiddish about doing it (and maybe you should be), stick to atapi drives; they're cheaper anyway. here is a good one.

Well, since it's a G5, bootcamp isn't an option, as it is... the simplest solution is to buy an ATAPI/E-IDE drive that plugs right into where the old drive currently sits, using the current cables.

Lightscribe is simply a technology that lets you flip over certain CD-Rs/DVD-Rs (that are marked as lightscribe compatible) to use the drive to "burn" a label onto the top. It can be useful, but having the technology in the drive doesn't inhibit/affect it's normal operation as a dual-layer DVD±RW burner. IIRC, the SH-S182M is slightly newer than the SH-S182D. (I had the wrong model suffix in the previous post.) The OS X lightscribe software is free from LaCie.

The Samsung drives are the same models that LaCie puts in it's high-end D2 external drives, which is why I recommended them. So long as you're running 10.4 or later, you shouldn't need to install the freeware patchburn for support.

If you need a new drive (which you may not), under it's current shipping promotion, NewEgg has a new SH-S182M for $32, with free shipping -- which is cheaper than the $31 S182D that costs $5 to ship.

thanks for taking the time to explain that. I will keep an eye on it and if i see any other signs of it getting stuck i will just switch it out.
