I can't remember where I saw it - but someone put a 2012 and 2011 mini side by side with the covers off and the fans did look slightly different. The number of blades appeared to be different. This could be the new asymmetric fans that apple has featured in its laptops but I don't really know.

So, I replaced the fan...here it is! Notice the replacement fan's motor is bigger than the original.

This shows the difference between the 2 fans. The 2012 fan is the installed fan.
