Replacement for Dreamweaver and Photoshop?

I have been using Dreamweaver since version 2, when HTML was pretty young. While I can do HTML and CSS by hand, I really do like the usefulness of the full GUI interface of DW.

I've been using Photoshop since it was in version 2... before HTML really existed. I use a lot of its features (layer styles, save for web, selection tools, and so on) for web development.

All that has been professional development. Now I'd like to do some personal web development, and I'd rather not pay more than my computer cost for these two tools.

Can anyone recommend something(s) that may give me a similar experience at a lower price-point?

I've had partial success with this so far.

For the site management function of Dreamweaver, I've found Yummy FTP to be very, very good.

For GUI HTML/CSS editing, I haven't found something that's as sophisticated as Dreamweaver yet. I'm considering trying to just use SeaMonkey (a Mozilla browser with HTML editor... the descendent of Netscape).

For graphics editing, I am looking at ImageWell. It seems to be great at optimizing for the web, but somewhat limited in editing. I'm going to get the paid version and see if that does the trick. For web graphics, the tool I'd really like to use is ImageReady. It has the selection and layer property tools I'd like. But apparently Adobe does not sell it unbundled from Photoshop. Any clue as to what I can do?

Anyway... I thought it was amusing to do the math on these competing packages. I think Photoshop and Dreamweaver are a powerful combo, and I'm comfortable in them, but look at the price difference:

Photoshop: $650
Dreamweaver: $400
Total: $1,050
(And neither one is Intel native, so I'd be hobbled until they feel like upgrading, at which point I'd have to shell out another $200 and $170.)

Yummy FTP: $25
SeaMonkey: $0
Imagewell Xtras: $15
Total: $40

The difference is the price of a MacBook. Sheeze.

I don't know about Dreamweaver, but you can always get a beta version of Photoshop CS 3.

I have it and it is suppose to run natively on Intel Macs. My iMac approves of it too!

Did you say you did web design professionally? I'm surprised you dont hand code in some sort of IDE...

We have 1 guy who uses Dreamweaver here and its only for template design. The rest of the developers code either in TextMate (Mac) or an IDE for J2EE and raw hand coding for the Websphere environment.

For Photoshop equivalency, try GimpShop for OS X. (free)

We have 1 guy who uses Dreamweaver here and its only for template design. The rest of the developers code either in TextMate (Mac) or an IDE for J2EE and raw hand coding for the Websphere environment.

Sure, I code by hand, but I prefer a GUI. I also prefer an automatic transmission. Why have a computer if I'm the one that has to do all the work?

I did graphic design before there was a web, so I am used to the GUI approach. And while I get a lot more control in raw text, I like the immediate feedback I editing in a full GUI environment.

Hey.... why the heck haven't I been looking at Gimp? Duh. Thanks for the reminder. So, does it have a simple optimize-for-web function like Photoshop?
