I just transferred my sim card into a brand new iphone and it came up with the activation screen, I did it and put my apple id in and it activated but with no new number, the apple representitive said this is a "soft" activation, can someone please clarify?

Well you should be able to make calls and stuff with your old telephone number/contract..
