Apple has finally agreed to replace my macbook they called and left a message on the voice mail saying that they were going to replace it with a new one. Does anyone know wether that means a brand new unit or a refurb unit? Is it a retail box?

why no? refurbs come in like-new condition, so you won't be able to tell a difference cosmetically. plus they've been fixed of any problems they'd had, so they'll be in good working order..obviously your old MB was not, so what do you care as long as you end up with a working one?

plus that will affect the resale value if its a refurb. And who knows how many battery cycles they did and how much wear and tear they put on the different components like the hard drive

I bought a refurb'd iBook 12" 1.33 G4 for $799. I got it late on a Thursday afternoon. I started running into problems immediately, since I was heading to the Twin Cities on Friday, I decided to wait and bring it into the Southdale Applestore. I arrived with my iBook about 8:30pm (half hour before closing) got in the genius waiting list. About 8:45 they called me up. I explained what was happening, what I'd done. They ran some more tests. I told them I'd had it about 24hours and was not a happy guy. I didn't make a big deal out of it or anything. The genius guy called up the mgr, explained to him what happened. I had not thought to bring the reciept so they checked out my P.O. The mgr went in the back room and grabbed me a NEW one. He handed it to and apologized for the trouble and with a pat on the back shooed me out the door with a NEW iBook to replace my refurbed iBook. I've been terribly happy ever since but am waiting to grab a Blackbook as soon as they update them soon. I'll pass on my iBook to my wife who's using an older G3 900 iBook (bought one week before the updates to the G4 chip! )

I'd be shocked if they sent you a refurbed. Why is it it going to take 2-3 weeks?

Anyways, good luck!

Applecare often grabs refurbs as their replacement units. I guess you won't know for sure until it arrives, though.

How so?

Every replacement unit I have ever gotten has a new serial, not a refurb serial - refurbs have a unique serial.

Does the computer usually come all boxed up like a retail unit iGary. Do they have you ship your accessories back also? Do you ship it back in the box it came in? Or do you ship it in those boxes they send you to get repairs done. How many replacement units have you gotten iGary? Sorry for all the questions.

I wish I knew for sure wether it will be a refurb or not. More people are saying new than refurb so that makes me happy.

I've posted on it between a dedicated thread and the random shutdown thread. But what essentially happened was I started geting the random shutdowns so I called in on a monday, had a box tuesday, they recieved it wednesday, fixed it wednesday, and had it back to me thursday. Fast turnaround but unfortunately they scratched it a little bit and it had colored vertical lines on the screen, the trackpad button wasn't functional on the left side and it had black grease marks on the trackpad button. So I called in that same thursday and they promised to repair the unit by the next monday. I recieved a box friday and mailed it in. Monday came and no unit. I called tuesday and thursday and they just said they didn't have any information except that it was being repaired. Friday I was tired of waiting so I emailed and miraculusly it mailed out saturday and got to me this monday. But it was in really, really bad shape monday. The top was scratched unbelievably and it had some black grease marks again towards the top of the top case and the top case wasn't even pushed on all the way. I recieved a call from apple the same monday because of my previous email on friday and he asked how it was I told him and he said they would repair it again. I asked for a replacement unit but he refused. I complained and said how upset it made me and he still said no. Then yesterday(tuesday) he called and left a voice mail saying that they will replace the unit.

I got the info today on where to mail it to and such. Probably won't get a chance to mail it out til next week as I have to get the box out of storage and I work all day for the next couple of days.

So you'll probalby have to mail it in at least one more time but probably two more times. If they mess up the repair this next time. Its unfortunate and hopefully apple gets the memphis plant to get their act together or they revoke the contract and go with someone else.

If it's from China I'd say it'd be a new unit. I know replacement PARTS are refurbed, dunno about new machines though.

I just wouldn't feel good using a refurb. I like to know how the hard drive, lcd, and battery have been treated.

Ref. Macs are totally fine.
One of my friends bought a Ref. iMac G4 and it worked beautifully!

My experience was NOT FINE. The refurb I was sent had a bowed portion of the lower case near the latch release - about 1" long and the accessories were clearly used - not pristine - clearly different from the new retail units.

The packing was very LOW QUALITY - a crummy cardboard egg crate packing.

If you choose to purchase a refurb and are ok with what your are getting - so be it. OTOH - not acceptable if it is a replacement for a defective full retail unit you paid the $$$$ for.

I didn't even mail off the broken one yet and one just arrived via fedex, thing is they told me 3 weeks and its only been a day(can't complain there), 2 the box is like kicked in on the side towards the bottom, and 3 the box has three sets of tape seals and two of those sets were broken. So this machine has been opened at least twice.

What the funk. I feel rude demanding a different one but this one clearly has been opened at least twice.

it shipped from 2811 elk grove ca so would I assume that it was probably returned? Isn't that an apple place. Would it be a refreshed model? What would anybody think? I really don't want to be a dick but its clearly been opened at least twice and its kicked in on the side.

I wonder if I took it into an apple store if they would exchange it as long as I didnt' open it?

Yeah the online warranty checker says it was sold august 28. Oh man I am pissed.

Well, call up applecare, you didn't buy one that had already been opened and that is not what they led you to believe on the phone...though I guess if someone returned it, technically it is not a refub. Still, if it were me, I think I would at least give them a call, as this doesn't seem to compute with what they told you to expect...:(
