Hi all

I currently have the 2018 2.2 GhZ 15" MBP, and although I wasn't looking to place it, the M1 models have changed my thinking a lot.

My use case is very much for emails, excel modelling, photo editing, some light video editing (this is more of a future ambition than a regular use case), and some publisher work. I rarely use my MBP because of the battery life I pretty poor for me, averaging around 3 hours of actual use.

I have always preferred smaller form-factor computers, and experimented with the gen 1 12" Macbook when it was released, only to get frustrated with the performance of it. My current computer spends most of the time on my desk connected to a monitor, but the appeal of having something more portable, with much better battery life, really appeals.

I have ruled out the 13 MBP because I prefer the smaller air footprint and don't like the idea of the 13 being updated properly in 6 months time; I don't think that'll be the case with the MBA.

My existing MBP benchmarks on Geekbench at 948 single / 4662 multi-core, and this has 16GB of RAM (https://browser.geekbench.com/macs/macbook-pro-15-inch-mid-2018). Is it really likely that the new MBA will be around 40%+ better performance than my existing computer? I'm tempted to wait for the [M2] models, however, for my realistic use-case the M1 chip should be more than adequate, especially as I don't find mine struggling too often.

If I buy the base spec MBA with 8GB of RAM, I will be able to sell my current MBP for more money, and be able to upgrade my monitor too.

I also use an 11" ipad pro with the magic keyboard, and whilst I long for the day I can use (or the 12.9") this as a laptop replacement, the software is just not cut out to it, so I often carry my MBP too. The new ipad mini and the MBA could be a really nice alternative (for me), if the performance is going to be better than my existing situation.

All comments welcome, thank you!

Yes. It's really true that it will be at least 40% faster. And silent. And cool running. And more than 8 hours of battery.

If you are used to the 15" screen size, the 13" may be a disappointment.

I have the 15" 2015 MBP and the 16" 2019 MBP but my eyes are getting worse over time and I could not live with a 13".

Thus, I opted for the M1 Mini and dual 27" displays - much easier on my aging eyes...

I just got the MBP M1 16/1TB and I find it’s faster than my 16” i9. I can’t really believe it. Plus it last all day on battery. It’s one of the best upgrades I’ve done.

I actually did exactly what you are considering: 2018 MBP 15 out, MBA 13 M1(8 GB, 512 GB) in.

Couldn’t be happier although I have to agree with @clarencek ... 14 inch would be better for my eyes as I chose the 15 at the time for that specific purpose. Anyway, the 13 is just beautiful.

FWIW, today I ran my MBA with my external screen and iPad on sidecar. Three screens with the big one for work, the MBA for email and the iPad running the tv.

So now I am thinking about doing the same - replace the 16" MBP that runs so hot and battery life stinks.

The 16" display is NICE but for a $2400 price tag, it seems like I can buy 2 M1 13" MBA !

sold my 2015 fully specced mbp and got the MBA base, couldn't be happier. I even prefer the smaller screen size which worried me, but its so much nicer to look at , and so bright. I managed to get a decent price for my MBP but already I see lots of Intels flooding the market so I imagine the demand will drop.
