Hi all
I currently have the 2018 2.2 GhZ 15" MBP, and although I wasn't looking to place it, the M1 models have changed my thinking a lot.
My use case is very much for emails, excel modelling, photo editing, some light video editing (this is more of a future ambition than a regular use case), and some publisher work. I rarely use my MBP because of the battery life I pretty poor for me, averaging around 3 hours of actual use.
I have always preferred smaller form-factor computers, and experimented with the gen 1 12" Macbook when it was released, only to get frustrated with the performance of it. My current computer spends most of the time on my desk connected to a monitor, but the appeal of having something more portable, with much better battery life, really appeals.
I have ruled out the 13 MBP because I prefer the smaller air footprint and don't like the idea of the 13 being updated properly in 6 months time; I don't think that'll be the case with the MBA.
My existing MBP benchmarks on Geekbench at 948 single / 4662 multi-core, and this has 16GB of RAM (https://browser.geekbench.com/macs/macbook-pro-15-inch-mid-2018). Is it really likely that the new MBA will be around 40%+ better performance than my existing computer? I'm tempted to wait for the [M2] models, however, for my realistic use-case the M1 chip should be more than adequate, especially as I don't find mine struggling too often.
If I buy the base spec MBA with 8GB of RAM, I will be able to sell my current MBP for more money, and be able to upgrade my monitor too.
I also use an 11" ipad pro with the magic keyboard, and whilst I long for the day I can use (or the 12.9") this as a laptop replacement, the software is just not cut out to it, so I often carry my MBP too. The new ipad mini and the MBA could be a really nice alternative (for me), if the performance is going to be better than my existing situation.
All comments welcome, thank you!
