My hard drive on my iMac 2011 died. I purchased a new hard drive with Catalina installed. I swapped out the drives and restarted my computer I get the additional power on sound but the screen is black. I checked the connections and everything seems to be good. Any suggestions?

Try holding option at boot up to get the boot device menu, if it shows up, you should be good. If not, it’s not bootable for some reason.

Catalina does not support that imac,
Apple
you could restart then hold the option key to see what is available
or internet recovery, cmd r

the black screen is weird, you should get a grey or whitish screen instead.

Power down, all the way off.

Then boot using this key command:
Command-OPTION-R

If you connect via wifi, you'll need your wifi password.
The internet utilities take a while to load, be patient.

Does this work?
Do you get to the internet utilities?
If so, that's an important first step.

Next, do this:
Open disk utility.
ERASE the internal drive to "Mac OS extended with journaling enabled, GUID partition format".
When done, quit disk utility.

Now open the OS installer.
Accept whatever version of the OS it presents to you.
Start clicking through.

Does the OS install?
