I have an iPhone 6S Plus that I'd still like to use occasionally to shoot photos and watch videos.

Is it possible to get a new battery for this pone?

Can I replace it myself, or would an Apple store do it for me?

If so, what is the process during the pandemic?

How much would this cost?

And should I bother doing anything in my iPhone 6S Plus, or should I just pitch it and get a newer phone? (I do own an iPhone 11 Pro Max and an iPhone 12 Pro Max, but those are tied up for video productions.)

I have a 6S as a backup phone and with a SIM from a different country network in it. it's running the latest iOS 15 beta and performs well. The issue is the storage - I got the 16GB version which isn't enough to do much apart from using it as a backup phone with mainly stock apps.

I was lucky with the battery as I got it changed when Apple did the cheap changes due to some court ruling or something.

It'll cost you £50 in the UK. Change the URL to match your country.

You are in the UK so maybe you can't answer this, but why do I have to go online and set up an appointment and then show a gov't issued ID?

What info do I have to give to set up an appointment?

And what are they doing with my ID? (I have BIG issues with people getting near my gov't ID and they better not try and scan it!)

This is sounding very Big Brother-esque for a fricking battery...

In China, I usually buy a third-party battery and replace it by myself. It's too expensive to go to Apple after-sales.

When I had my battery replace by Apple on my 6S I had to setup an appointment and only thing I had to enter was my AppleID. Never had to show an ID at the store. It took one hour for them to replace the battery so I went to a local coffee shop and waited until they sent me a text saying it was ready for pickup. Very easy and convenient. Who said you need a government ID?

When you go, remember to bring these items:

  • Your sales receipt (if possible), in case your service requires proof of purchase
  • Your device and any accessories that you need help with
  • A form of personal identification, such as a driving licence, passport or other government-issued ID

They never asked me for an ID. I had to backup and wipe the phone so if the phone was damaged during the repair and I received a new device there would be no personal data left on the old device. If anything, they may ask for your ID to verify you as the owner of the device but as I said, I wasn't asked to..

I would hope for a battery replacement on a 5 year old iPhone they would chill a bit.

If it was for warranty work on a new phone or phone replacement, then I could see needing more info.

How about going to a certified Apple repair place? Will I get just a good of a repalcement battery?

Not sure about that. I would just go to Apple to get it done because if the phone is damaged during the repair they will replace it with whatever the closest phone still available that is similar. You could get lucky and get a 7+ or 8+ if the 6S+ isn't available as a certified refurbished phone anymore.
