Could I replace my 2GHz Mac mini with the 1.4GHz Air and use as stationary with my Cinema display and corded keyboard? I don't really do anything processor-dependent except converting files with Visualhub and Handbrake, but it's not so important if it takes slightly longer.

took the words right out of my mouth...
I'd prefer the look of the mini over a closed laptop for desktop use. Or I would keep the mini and just get the air, it's not like you'd get all that much selling a used mini.

Why not? Flash drive. Alternateing ergonomics, portability without having two computers. That's how Apple markets it also. Selling the Mini would bring in almost half the price of the cheapest Air so another reason not to have two computers.

The beauty of the air is to use it on the go, or away from a desktop experience. If you're going to use it mostly as a desktop, stick to the mini.

If you need a desktop as well as a on the go machine, then yes get the air. But your original post is asking if it should replace a desktop machine which is why people are asking why?

You're paying a premium for portability with the air.
