Hello,
I'm from Germany, so my prices may be a little different.
I'm planning to replace my MacBook Pro mid 2012 13". In terms of performace and build quality/handling it's fine (it could be better, but it works alright), but my battery isn't that good anymore and last only 1,5-2 hours and it's getting a bit slower. So I thought I could sell it and buy, with that money and a little more, a newer, used one, cause you can't update the software and its pretty old, which could be a problem in the future. A new battery cost 100 to 150 as well, so I thought, the money could be spent better in another one. My budget is about 750-850$ (circa 600-700€ in Germany). I'm just a student, so I wanna spent as less money I can. If I spent 700 oder 800 bucks, it should be really worth it!
I'll use it mainly for Netflix, surfing, email, university but also small music productions on Logic Pro with an Audient iD4.
At first I thought getting a 2015 13" Retina (could get one for about 500$ in good shape and with a good battery). It's little more expensive( just have to spent 150-250$ more, but that's okay for a few years) but just a bit and it will be better and the software and the battery will last longer. That's what most people recommended me.
Than I looked a bit on eBay and saw a few 2018/2019 MacBook Air for about just slightly over budget. Would it be a better choice to spent a bit more and getting a newer 2018/2019 Air, so I can use it longer and maybe has some warranty? (Does I have warranty at apple on the used market?) But I read the CPU on the Air sounds way weaker and it's loud and warm. Or is it even better?
Or should I search I wait long til I maybe found a 2018 MacBook Pro for my budget? Is it even possible? Would it be a better choice.
The 2017 or 2016 MBP are not on my list, cause other people told me, the butterfly keyboard is pretty bad and the flexgate is/could be a huge problem, because I'll not have a warranty.
Sadly, the new 2020 m1 Macbook air is out of my budget - I don't want and can't so much money for a laptop.
Thank you very much and wish you merry christmas.
