replacing superdrive - 2006 intel imac

Hi,
I have a 20" intel imac core duo - i think it might be rev A
the superdrive refuses to read discs - i pop them it, it spins them round, makes a CRRRK sound - then spits the disc out again

So I'm thinking to pop open the casing, and replace the drive with one from OWC or Fastmac or similar. However, I've looked and looked for instructions on how to open the casing and get to the dvd drive, but cannot find any.

I can find ones for the G5 imac, but not the intel one. I read somewhere that the internals are not the same.
Am I just not typing in the right search string into google (or even this forum)? or will the G5 instructions suffice?
Had anyone tried this previously?

Welcome to the club of iMac users with dead Superdrives ... (and not brave enough to replace it )

if you are going to replace the SuperDrive on your iMac may i suggest that you go out & purchase a Panasonic (aka Matshita) UJ-875. This is the latest DVD burner available on the market & it is by far the fastest & newest model around.

If you have extra cash & want to go Blu-Ray then you can also pick up a Panasonic (aka Matshita) UJ-225 which will fit & work in your iMac. These sell for around US$500 & they are a 2x Blu-Ray Burner & Player. So you can start making your own Blu-Ray disks both single layer 25GB & dual layer 50GB. This unit also burns CD's & DVD's just like a superdrive. Not too sure what your budget is but if you can spare the extra bucks you can have yourself a kick ass iMac.

If you want to save yourself some $$$'s then eBay is your freind.

There are 2 or 3 legit sellers on their that sell these units & they are very reputable. I have been purchasing my upgrade SuperDrives & Blu-Ray burners from them for over 2 years now & they havent ripped me off once & their warranty service is just as good. They are not scared to replace a defective drive.
