Replacing superdrive

My question: my mbp superdrive seems to have suffered some minor water damage and now makes loud clunking noises before ejecting a disc. Is it worth following one of the ifixit guides to open it up and see if there's anything wrong, or should I just bite the bullet and ship it off to applecare (which could take weeks).
