Replacing the MacMini disk

Hi guys,

So I purchased the Mini with the 5400RPM 1TB drive and it proves quite slow... I'd like to buy a 1TB fusion drive and migrate.

Will OSX know that the migration destination is a fusion drive and automatically puts the OS/frequently used stuffs on the SSD part, or do I need to do a reinstall?

I was also thinking more of a SSD drive only for this... then add a thunderbolt external drive for the iTunes storage which is near 1TB. Would you advice this option?

Edit to ask an additional question: Will the 3TB fusion drive fit the Mac Mini? Anybody knows?

I think you need some clarification: A fusion drive actually consists of two seperate drives (a hard drive and an SSD), which are combined into a single drive in software, where the files that are used most are automatically copied from the hard drive onto the SSD for faster access. To the user, it appears to be a single drive.

That said, using an internal SSD and an external HDD, you could probably build a 3TB fusion drive, while internally, an 1TB hard drive along with a 256GB SSD would be the most viable solution (unless you want to spend serious cash on a 768GB SSD).

Bear in mind, tinkering with the hard drives in a Mac Mini voids the warranty. You'll need the OWC Data Doubler Installation Kit, and follow the guide to install the SSD. After that, you need to setup the drives in the Disk Utility as a Fusion Drive and reinstall (or if you have already important files on the Mac and made a backup, restore) the operation system. right now the biggest fusion drive for a mac mini is a 512gb ssd and the 1tb oem drive that came with the mini. so it would be a 1.5tb fusion drive. fusion drives must be inside the mini Ie only sata connections work.

you need to buy a 512gb ssd and a cable to build one.
