Why does he have to jailbreak it? I take my AT&T sim card out to use in a throw away phone, and I have no issues going back and forth.

He needs to get past the "Please connect to iTunes to activate" screen somehow. If he is not going to activate an "official" iPhone plan through iTunes, jailbreaking is how to do this.

These guys seem do to what i need - any one used them?

I can still use the works o2 sim card and avoid all the charges and 18 mnth contract - it's the future surely.:)

Why pay £70 when you can very easily do this yourself in about 30 minutes for free? There are numerous guides all over the internet (including this forum) on how to jailbreak the 1.1.2 iPhone. Doing so will "unlock" it to work with any O2 SIM card and plan. My advice is this: Don't waste your money!

Ok - I'm gonna make some people mad here with a couple of really silly questions but I need to be sure on some things.

1. I can get round the 18 month contract and surcharge /month by "jailbreaking" the phone - done by myself or "professionaly" ????
2. "Jailbreaking" will lose all warranty??
3. "jailbreaking" will render future updates useless??
4."jailbreaking" causes the loss of some functions - i.e. visual voicemail (even when putting a new O2 sim card in) and loss of merging calls.
5. "jailbreaking" could make your phone useless all together one updates via Apple are released ??

Sorry for the DOH factor, but i need to be sure on a few things here, £279 is a lot of cash to potentially blow away when all i may be left with is a iTouch.

1. Yep, do it yourself unless you are really not familiar with computers. I used this site to unlock an out of the box 1.1.1 and it was very easy - http://www.hacktheiphone.com

2. I'd assume that modifying the software of the iPhone would lose your warranty. Although there is nothing stopping you from restoring it and sending it back for repairs if something beyond your control went wrong with the iPhone.

3. You just stay put and down update unless it's been done and people are having success doing so.

4. Not sure about merging calls, but yes loss of visual voicemail.

5. As said before you just don't update your firmware unless it is safe. If you're happy to have all the features that are currently available apart from visual voicemail, then by right you could just keep it like that for the rest of it's life. With the current features it is a magnificent little piece of hardware.
