replacing/upgrading hard drive

i have a macbook air 2008 and i want to replace the hard drive. and can i upgrade the hard drive to a ssd ? how much storage does can i put into a macbook air

as much as you can afford, with the max currently at 512GB or so.

If you have the late 2008 MacBook Air (the one with the Nvidia 9400M), then that OWC SSD is the kindest thing that you can ever do to your Air. I got one for mine about a month ago to replace the HDD, and it is like a brand new machine. Seriously, *everything* happens instantly now, it is truly silent, and the battery lasts longer. And, fun fact, it now benches faster than the brand-new Airs in the Apple Store

If you can spare the cash for it (took me a while to scrape it together), it is completely worth it.

Not hard at all, so long as you don't mind working with small things. Ten screws to take off the bottom plate, four to take out the HDD. You may want to take out the battery for better access, which is another nine screws. So long as you can keep track of the little buggers, you should be fine.

Can you share with us the function of sleep/wake on your macbook air after the ssd upgrade? A lot of users with Macbook Pro had this problem after OWC ssd upgrade. Other users please share as well, if such problem persists. I don't want to disable my sleep function as OWC has recommended as a solution.

I am researching the SSDs available to replace the HD in my 13"Air A series.
It would appear that not all 1.8 ZIF drives will work in an Air A (early 2008 as opposed to the late 2008) as some SSD manufacturers supply a different model number for the Air A. Can anyone explain why?
Here are some that I think are compatible:-
Renice RN-K3E-Z1664 now replaced with the K3S series with sandforce controller and will be faster.
Runcore RCP-IVZ1864
Supertalent FZM64GF18H

I am not sure about this one and have asked the manufacturer.
MX Technology MXSSD1MNANOZ-60G update not suitable

Possible others:- but not sure about them:
Supertalent FZM64GW18P
Kingspec - too many fakes around
The photfast one is too expensive.

I am just about to go back and check the specs to see which ones support Trim as I belive it will shortly included in OSX
I will update the post when I find out about trim. Can anyone confirm any other drives currently available on the market that will work?
