I hope you guys can help.

I'm trying to create a quick folder icon that has the same bevel or shadow/highlight features that the application, burn and so on folders have in Mac os 10.5. I'm not familiar with using the blending options in PS and was wondering if anyone would mind giving me some pointers in how to create this?

Example:

What I would like to apply it to:

Thanks in advance!

looks like you have the blend more right.

for the layer that has the notebook on it ... click on fx then select bevel and emboss then play with the settings to make it look like you want it to

CS4. Upgraded from Elements 4 when I moved to the Mac. Thanks for the help.

I'd do a multiply or overlay blending mode and, for starters, add an inner shadow and maybe a very transparent (~10%) outer glow. Then just play around and tweak it until it looks right.

  1. Set your project to 100% zoom.
(CS4 might be improved in this regard, but previous versions were not accurate at other zoom levels.)
  2. Create your object and fill it with white.
  3. Use a layer style to create the bevel:
    Bevel and Emboss : Emboss
    Click the "Down" radio button.
Adjust the bevel properties to match your target.
  4. In the same layer style dialog:
    Choose the "Color Overlay" style
Set the color swatch to a medium gray
Set the "Blend Mode" to "Linear Burn".
Adjust the "Opacity" slider to match your target.
