Hi, let me cut to the chase: I want my Windows 7 Laptop to be able to access my Mac files in order to stream video over it. I was able to get the files I want to share to show up on Windows, but the speeds are atrocious to say the least (40 KB/s). The laptop is wireless, but the Mac is wired into a router. I can supply any additional information to help with the problem, but decided not to list (potentially) redundant/useless information since I don't know what needs to be known.

I thank you ahead of time.

Have you tried to connect yor laptop via wire instead of wireless. as a trial disable firewalls see if this is blocking ports.

Wireless band (2.4gHz, 5gHz), technology (A, B, G, N), router, distance? What is the link speed? (Not sure how to get this in Windows, but assume it is viewable somewhere in your WiFi settings.) How are you measuring speed? Take your video rendering software out of the equation: transfer a big file from the Mac to the PC, time it, and do the math.

WiFi speeds can be very significantly lower than theoretical maxs, especially on 5gHz when going through walls. If you're in another room, your connection will almost always be faster on 2.4gHz than on 5. The "300mbit/sec" can quickly degrade to 10 or 20.

But the number you are reporting (I assume it is 40k *bytes*/sec, not 40k*bits*/sec?) is awfully low.

Agree you ought to hook it up wired first and make sure that is working fine. Then try it on WiFi in the same room as the router.

It's not a firewall - a firewall would either block the connection or not.

Thanks everyone for the assistance. I tested it wired and it worked flawlessly (well, I had to change a few settings to get my files to appear this time), which kind of makes me sad as it half-defeats what I wanted to accomplish with this. Oh well.
