Anybody know of a good rescue CD/"live" Linux boot CD for Macs? Something like Knoppix for the PC architecture. I'd like to use it to rescue my PowerBook.

A friend was just telling me of such a thing, but I'm drawing a blank right now. Have you searched Google or linuxiso.org yet?
Why do you want linux to rescue your PowerBook? There isn't much that the stuff that came with it can't do. Just curious.

I think you can get a Gentoo Linux Live CD for the ppc architecture (what macs use).
I've got a really trimmed down installation of OS X on my ipod so if anything goes wrong with my main installs I can boot that instead.

I'd like to have access to a command line so I can copy away a few files. It's a long story... (Apple+S on startup doesn't work)
It sounds like you have bigger problems than needing a command line to copy files.crenz said:
You can't boot from your hard drive. You can boot from a CD. You can access the hard drive if you boot from a CD. You can reinstall the OS from the CD, but can't boot to the newly installed OS. You reset the PRAM and NVRAM. Have I correctly summarized your situation?
How much RAM do you have? What kind?
This is the oddest thing I've heard of for a while. When a lowly security update makes a computer stop booting and neither resetting NVRAM/PRAM nor a new OS fixes it. It doesn't add up.
