I have a 2 GB Nano acquired in 2005.
1) can anyone advise what generation this would be?
2) I have come across something for the first time. The unit is requiring
a password/4 digit numerical code and will not let me proceed/use further
without it. I do not know if or what my code is. Is there a generic one
anyone knows of or how to get rid of this (e.g. some sort of reset) to
allow me to use the unit?

Thank you,

That's a first gen nano. The second generation launched in September of 2006. The only way to clear the passcode will be to restore the iPod through iTunes. If iTunes says you must put the passcode in before it can be restored the only recourse at that point will be to put the nano into disk mode (this is done by resetting the iPod and then holding down on the center and play/pause buttons while the Apple logo appears on screen), and then restore through iTunes.
