With macOS 15.1 Apple introduced the option to install Apple App Store apps larger than 1GB directly on external drives.

Feature works well generally, but unfortunately CapCom's Resident Evil Village is not working from the external drive.

This apps starts correctly with several start screens. Afterwards it asks to "update the purchase history", but unsuccessfully. Error message "Purchase history couldn't be updated, please check network connection...". Afterwards there is only an option to close the game. Same issue with Resident Evil 4. No issues with Death Stranding, its running like expected from external drive.
When I move the Resident Evil app from the external drive to the application folder on the internal drive it runs like expected.
CapCoom support doesn't responded (yet?).

Hey,
Did they ever answer you? I have the same problem with RE4. I can only run it from internal SSD but I can't keep it there - too big.

Thanks!

Sorry, no answer yet...
For now I'm moving the app between internal and external SSD, depening if I want to play or need the space otherwise

Meanwhile I got an answer from Capcom:

"...Kindly note that the macOS versions that are currently supported for this game are: macOS 12.0.0 / macOS 13.0.0 / macOS 14.2.0 / macOS 14.2.1 / macOS 14.4.1 / macOS 15.0.0 and therefore we are unable to provide assistance given the particular circumstances....".

The feature to install and run larger apps from external drives was introduced with macOS 15.1

Before you could simply copy it to an external drive, the only improvement in 15.1 is that it can install apps directly on an external driver, but nothing has changed regarding everything else.

Yet again a classic customer support knowing nothing. Probably Capcom made some wrong assumptions, and until (and only if) they update it nothing can be done about it.

another clue that Apple could be moving to allowing Apps only downloaded from the Apple App Store to run on future versions of macOS. Just like the iPhone. Just like the iPad.
