Hello all. I have a 500gb ssd and the kit with thermal sensor to install into a mid 2011 iMac running high Sierra.

My question is, the Mac has a 1tb HDD currently with just a single partition. I want to shrink the partition to 480gb so that I am able to clone it. Only 44gb is used so it shouldn't be an issue. What is the best utility to do this?

I'm not very experienced with MacOS and would be greatful for any suggestions you may have.

Thanks!

I would recommend Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) to make a bootable clone. It is free, fully functional for 30 days. I have used it for many years.

It clones the files, so you do not need a 1TB drive to clone 44GB.

One more vote for CCC.
If you've never used it, you won't understand just how easy this is until you've tried it.

I will absolutely give CCC a try. I usually use EaseUS or clonezilla for my projects but like I said, I'm not very versed in Mac world.

Thanks for the replies, happy new year!

The OPs question is valid, because he probably tried to clone it using Disk Utility. That won't work with a larger drive going to a smaller drive. CCC is good, but I use SuperDuper. The cloning feature on SD is free forever. You need to pay and register to use some of the more advanced features. If you do register, the registration fee is less than CCC.

I purchased both CCC & Super Duper! (SD), so I have used both. I think that CCC would be best for the OP's intended use since CCC will also allow cloning of the Recovery Partition and Super Duper! does not. It is important to have the invisible Recovery partition since the new SSD will be the new primary boot drive.
