Resolution Independence is gonna be a key feature in Leopard in Oct 07, to enable high resolutions.

Now we've seen MBP 17 going up to 1920×1200, up 1 notch from 1680×1050. See wikipedia's List of common resolutions.

Question is, will MBP 15's resolution go up a similar notch from 1440×900 to 1680×1050?

If yes, why didn't it happen at the same time as MBP 17? Will we see it with Leopard in Oct 07; if nothing else, to take advantage of X'mas 07.

Related note: is there something in the 5 Jun update,
  • MBP 15 has the LED backlit, while
  • MBP 17 has the hi-def option
such that by Oct 07, we'll have as well
  • MBP 17 has the LED backlit, while
  • MBP 15 has the hi-def option
so as to complete the 2-variables => 4-combinations?

1920x1200 on a 15" screen? I really doubt it at this point. Maybe in a year or two. If anything Apple will bump the specs on the 15" to 1680x1050. I can't see Apple offering eight different screen option between the two the computers. (4 options, in either glossy or matte)

The poster mentioned 1680x1050, not 1920x1200 for the 15".

Unfortunately we all know that the 17" screen wont be LED anytime soon, however, perhaps the reason that the 15" hasn't been bumped is because it's WXGA+ only, being a new technology, and not WSXGA+ ?

Ultimately the real question is why the 13" MacBook isn't WHUXGA already. I mean come on, that should be standard. :p

It's all speculation, but I'd say that given time the 15" is bound to move to 1680x1050.

It looks like the 15" stayed put at 1440x900 for a couple of reasons:

1. The higher res on the 17" is a selling point despite still being backlit with CCFL. This is much needed to maintain the appeal of the 17" models.

2. Until resolution independence arrives, visuals on higher res 15" displays may appear too small. While this also applies to the 17", due to the price premium and size, the 17" model falls more into the professional bracket, which knows better what they're in for with higher resolution displays

I was thinking about starting a thread about this yesterday.
A valid question indeed.

This could very well be one of the reasons for not having a higher res 15".
I do have some objections about your other reason though. Pro is Pro.

I did read in one of the numerous threads about the 17" that a LED backlit version wouldn't be available until 2009. I have no idea wether the poster knew what he/she was talking about, but I would be interested to hear from people who follow the display market more closely.

Does a higher resolution 15" LED backlit panel even exist today? And if it doesn't, when will it?
