I don't remember if Apple did anything like this with the PowerPC to Intel shift, but do you think they may offer an upgrade path from an Intel-based Mac to an Apple Silicon Mac?

I just purchased my MacBook Air 2020 about 2-3 weeks ago, but I'm curious if in the coming months if they would offer a trade-up program where.... let's say you save $500 if you trade in the base MBA 2020 to go with the new Apple Silicon MBA 2020.

This would be helpful in getting more people to migrate, create the ability to recycle older systems, and put systems in their inventory at reduced prices. It's just a thought.

Apple already has a recycle/trade in program. Nothing about it will change most likely. You fill out a form with what Mac you have and condition it is in, they give you a quote for how much they will give you for it, then you send the Mac you have to them, they inspect it and confirm it matches the specifications you told them, and then you get the money. Which you then can choose to take as an Apple gift card to put directly towards another Apple purchase (they give you a credit back after you make the purchase). You can even do it at an Apple Store now once the Apple Stores open back up (before with Macs you could only do it through the mail). It will still work the same even when the ARM Macs come out.

So probably no incentive to upgrade to Apple Silicon with recent purchasers? Alrighty. I know they already do the trade in but was more curious about trade up.

It's effectively the same thing. Either way, you're saving a little bit on buying a new Mac by handing over your current one. The only difference would be a marketing name for the same program.

It's highly unlikely, and there's no real reason to offer it unless they intend to cull support earlier than usual and want to save some backlash. None of us can do more than speculate anyway.

I really like that change of Macs being able to trade in to some of the Apple stores, that way they have proof of the operation and condition of the computer being received. One thing that people need to be aware of is the trade in value does vary a bit, some days it might be worth more or less a bit. Track it and you see that. ;)

They offered a trade in of $870 for a 2019 21.5 inch iMac with maxed out specs for which I paid a little less than $3,000. ???
