I can't replace the convenience of having at mouse reach the icon of file or folder at top of every window, as it used to be in prior OSs.
I got used to know the small icon was "alive", so you could unmount a disk, drag to a folder, etc. We can set Finder to show the path at bottom to alleviate this. Using icons from path bar is quite similar.

BUT, I can't find a similar workaround with other apps, Preview notably. It's impossible to send an opened file in Preview to the trash (no way; try yourself) from the app! (e.g.)
If you drag the name of an image in Preview (try it), the window reduces size drastically, but it seems made just to change position around the screen! You can't drop that beautifully transformed miniature to ANY place: no to trash or folder or compatible app or document (Pages, e.g.). I don't get the idea.
For some actions, dragging the miniature from the side vertical bar -when visible- works. But it's a partial workaround. Pages accepts this dragging, at least. Curiously, it's impossible to drop file in the trash from there.

...This is a stupid regression in functionality and feels inconsistent, IMHO.
It's a pity, I think that little icon was useful. There were some other tricks to do do with that (and it was informative and non intrusive...)

Has anybody found a way to make Preview windows more useful?
Any imaginative setting to fix this?.

NEVER MIND. I had posted a video, but re-read your post and realized you already knew you could drag thumbnails from the side bar. For me, that's good enough. Can't say I would find being able to delete files directly from Preview terribly useful via drag-and-drop. I've never thought it was cumbersome to simply command+delete the file from Finder. Seems like that would be actually faster than dragging something to the Trash. Now what WOULD be slightly beneficial would be able to use a keyboard shortcut within Preview to immediately Trash the file and have it disappear from the Preview window. Currently, even if you drag the file that is open in Preview to the Trash from within Finder, it stays open in Preview.

When I drag the icon, it moves the file location to anywhere I drag it (e.g., to the Desktop or another folder) except the trash.

I suppose we’re calling “icon” to the miniature transformed from dragging the file name.
In my intel iMac, in last 12.3 system, I can’t drop that thing anywhere; it just gets normal size again and places where left, after dropping.
Can you drop it on an open document? That would be nice and logical. I can’t.

I’m used to work with the mouse, and of course I know I can do each process with different strategies, and perhaps quicker with keyboard.
I‘ve always thought the small icon (followed by its name) with “use” was a great idea, (and was praised as another finesse of macOS when the “trick” was explained.

I just got used to that thinking. I could pinch and drop a few opened documents to the printer, from different windows and/or app, I could discard to the trash a small batch of opened files that came from different folders (that’s easier than going back to visit every folder in Finder!)...
I think the miss, mainly, is when doing same process for a group of files that are open and active, without having to revisit different places in Finder. I understand that perhaps is my very particular use.

Of course, I can keep doing my work in Monterey, with other methods. But I wondered if I missed an obscure setting in Preferences, or if there’re is a similar trick.
I’ve read other users asking for the thing, and it’s quite easy to replace (inferior path with icons) in Finder, to provide again this convenience, with exactly the same use, use that I miss in other apps, which seems lost.

I took care choosing the title of the thread, because I felt curiosity about other’s thinking about this.
It’s not a bug. It’s a design decision, but I don’t like it.

I was so sure the function was nice...

THE SMALL ICON IS THERE, STILL. HIDDEN! 😀👍

It's there! Even in Finder, and with same functionality as always.

The trick (oh, I kept searching...!) is that the pointer has to hover for a little while over name of file. Then, the name moves, slides, and the little icon -file or folder- appears (or to click on it; sometimes it's needed the firs time). In Finder, and in every other app I've tried.
Wonderful. You can drag the little icon, of course. Nice.

Well, take it as a "trick".
Sorry, I don't know if this is clearly documented somewhere, or perhaps everybody knew. It's so easy, I feel dumb.
