Resolved - Safari crashed Mac

Hi. Encountered a horrible issue on my 27-inch iMac (mid-2011) just before Christmas and was wondering if anyone else had encounter the same problem.

I had been surfing my regular websites in Safari when the screen went white, and after a few seconds the iMac restarted. Once restarted, after logging back into the iMac, the same thing happened before I could do anything else.

Fortunately I have MacBook which saw me over Christmas, but having tried various options such as starting in Safe Boot first (which was OK), and using another account I have on the iMac (which was OK), logging back into my normal account and launching Safari resulted in the same white screen/restart.

So I used safe boot again, sent all the Safari caches and preferences to the Trash, and did a hard boot.

This seems to have cured it, but I would be very interested to know if anyone knows what may have caused this.
I am assuming that a website has cached something that OS X doesn't get one with, so would like to avoid that website if possible.

I am on OS 10.11.2 and Safari 9.0.2.

Any ideas/assistance gratefully received.

It may be like you said that something in the cache from an odd website caused this, but the fact that a safe mode boot alone fixed it makes me think otherwise. A safe mode boot stops all startup and login items from launching, so if that stopped it, it makes me think you have some sort of conflict with a third party utility or app.

Download and run the app. Etrecheck while in a normal boot (not safe mode). It will create and anonymized report you can upload here for us to take a look at what might be running.

After that, run the app Malwarebytes to scan for any malware you might have accidentally installed.

Thanks Weaselboy. I think Safe Boot was OK because it didn't automatically re-open Safari.

I've removed all the Safari caches and preferences from when the problem was occurring, so can't see Etrecheck giving any useful information.

All seems to be running OK now. Was just wondering if anyone was aware of a (fairly) well known website that might have caused this issue so I could avoid it.

If it happens again and it is obvious which website might have caused it I'll post here.

Just thought I'd give an update on this. My iMac got steadily worse until the display went blank and a restart wouldn't fix it. Doing a screen share from my MacBook showed it was running but loading About this Mac had no information for the display. The graphics card had failed. Took it to the 'local' (25 miles away) authorised repairer who confirmed this. Said it would cost £500+ to fix, or I could try claiming under EU warranty law. Did that and Apple agreed to fix it. I go it back last Friday and all is working well

Safari crashing Mac has become a daily thing now...almost once in a day. Wifi issues after sleep mode (safari not loading tabs and get stuck...also delay on connecting to the wifi... imagine that i use even Remote Extreme with 5ghz) still exist. Worst Mac OS release ever.....Pfffffffff

Can anyone have a look?

Wow, its just WAY less confusing if you start your own thread, OP has an iMac and hasn't upgraded, from your comments you have but from what, to what, when, how and with what effect? What website when Safari crashes etc etc...start your own thread and post the history of your problem in it, then no-one wastes their time looking through your etrecheck output and comparing with the OP's problem...
