This looks like Non-Uniform Backlight Issues (Stagelight Effect) on the edges and a White Spot issue near the middle. I would recommend taking it to Apple or an AASP for a Display Assembly replacement (In Warranty).

You're not paranoid, this is not considered 'functional' behavior of any Mac Display. Eventually, the entire screen could possibly go dim, if the Backlight goes out.
