Responding to iMsg pop up on iOS PB 1

When I am on my iPad and get a message from someone, it pops up but I can't figure out how to respond to the messege without going into the app. There is no response area or way to get the keyboard up. Is this a known problem, or am I just not swiping right or something maybe? Thanks!

On the iPhone you swipe it down and it sort of half fills the screen (hard to explain) - bigger than before but not properly open.

May iPad is similar ?

I tried swiping down and it did expand but there was nowhere to reply showing, but I just got a msg and tried it again and it worked. Thanks so much. Now I know if it doesn't do right it's being glitchy. I was just thinking I may have been doing something wrong.
