Restart Finder to eject hardware, OSX 10.3.9

Noob here.

Whenever I need to eject a compact flash card, even if none of its files are open, it says that its files are in use and it cannot be ejected. Restarting Finder allows me to eject the CF card.

What can I do to make it eject the first time?

If it says file is in use, then it means an open program has something to do with that card. What is on the CF card and what are you doing with it? I could give a more specific answer.

When you put the card in does some program automatically download the files on it? If so, when you try to eject it is that program still open? If not, and if you manually drag them over to your hard drive then I do not see what could be causing that. Maybe check Activity Monitor to see what processes are running the next time this happens.

It's a CF card that I use only in my digital camera. So, photos are on it.

I'm pretty certain all my programs are closed - I cmd+q to close running programs and cmd+option+escape to verify and the only thing still running is finder, which then needs to be reset before I can safely eject the card.

This is on a Powerbook, G4 if that makes any difference.

Does the CF card show up in the Finder as a mounted drive? Check your sidebar (if you are running 10.3 or higher) and look for a mounted drive symbol. Do you have one? If so, hit the little triangle next to it to unmount it. (Or drag the image of the mounted drive to the trash from the desktop). If you do not have one, then I am at a loss.

Yep, have tried that way to eject also. No dice. It's not a big deal, just something that annoys me and if there was a way around it, that'd have been great.

I think it's a bug

I get this often with my ipod, even when there is nobody else logged on and no windowed applications open.

Do any of the tiger users out there experience with this?
