Restart-Progress bar starts twice

I had quite a few problems with my 2012 iMac this morning. It was as if there was a massive traffic jam, and with every turn I tried I ran into the spinning pizza wheel. Had to do hard shut downs. Finally seem to have gotten everything working (ran Disk Utility a few times); however, when the computer restarts now, the apple logo shows up, then the progress bar starts, but then, after it gets about 20% of the way across, the screen 'reboots', if you will, and the progress bar starts again and completes itself, opening the computer. This doesn't seem right.

I am not a techie, so please consider that when you respond. :)
