Restore Brand New Phone?

Ok...first iphone here. I just got it in the mail. Plugged it into itunes and it said "itunes couldnt read your iphone" and the only option was to "restore" i went ahead and clicked it. Are you supposed to have to do this? Im just trying to activate it. HELP

You shouldn't have to restore it, but its not going to hurt anything unless you have some contact or such not backed up on the phone.

I would just go through the restore and see what happens from there.

ok thanks. it took while to restore it but now it appears to be working for activation thanx so much!
