Is it possible to restore from a Mountain Lion back-up in Lion?

I'm a little confused by your post. Restoring TO lion from mountain lion is difficult but there have been several posts saying it is possible. I have not done it. So I can not be much help there. But if this is not what you meant then please restate your question.

You probably should be able to do a fresh install of Lion and use the Migration Assistant.

I would not count on being able to do this. The best way to approach this would be to do a clean install of Lion and manually move your data back from the backup. Migration Assistant will likely not work at all, just as it does not when going from Lion back to Snow Leopard.

Thanks for the replies, let's see if i can explain myself better now.
My question is:
If i downgrade to Lion by doing a clean reinstall, will I be able to restore with Time machine from a backup i made while using Mountain Lion?

That's not a good idea, as TimeMachine probably would try to restore the system files as well. This would mess up your system - if(!) it works.

Time Machine lets you do selective restores as well. I would not try to restore actual applications and system setup data.

I would suggest you consider skipping over user preferences files. And things like Mail may have a different on disk format in Mountain Lion, so that may not be able to be restored.

The real question is... will a Lion system be able to properly see a Mountain Lion TM Disk? I would hope so. There was no real reason for Apple to muck with that.

The answer as I just said is probably, but you have to be careful what you restore.

Thanks guys. Yeah, this is merely out of curiousity as i want to know if i should keep my old lion backup just in case.

For now i think the most sensible solution would be to wipe your HD clean and manually move important files/document and then reinstall applications.

I am having problems since i've used migration assistant to transfer all my data from my old MBP on ML to new my MBP runnion Lion. Mail, iPhoto, safari etc won't open at all. I am upgrading my new MBP to ML this morning, do you think that would fix my problems? Or do I really need to wipe my new MBP clean and manually transfer my media over via connected ethernet cable?
