So, the hard drive in my late 2009 iMac crashed. Ironically, I just bought a 5,1 (2010) and am pretty much done with its upgrade. (I think the iMac got jealous and crashed the disk!

I put it in the 5,1 and it recognizes it. It says it can't fix the damage, but it shows all my folders. The folders are locked (from the iMac.). I also backed everything up a few days ago, so I have a time machine back up.

I can't use it as a start up disk because of the damage.

HOW DO I ACCESS MY STUFF!!!! I am only medium worried at this point.

Thanks everyone!

Put the drive in your Mac Pro,
start it from Mac Pro's OS

click your imac drive
right click get info
open the lock, type admin password
click ignore ownership

now the drive's unlocked

copy your data

think of a serious backup strategy for your stuff, hard- and software can fail any day

I think OP said he had time machine backup but wanted to something else first. Your advice on using Mac Pro is very good.

Yes, that worked well. thanks!

It is unlocked, but says I can only read. And all my folders are empty.

Getting a bit more worried.

I did have a time-machine from just a couple of days ago. I don't know how to retrieve it since it isn't the (and can't be) the boot drive

yes, I shot to quick.

I had too much customers without any backup whining in case of failure so I get a little rude about backups :)
