restore iphone as new..

Before i call apple and complain about my iphone sometimes showing wrong usaeg stats and actually being in "use" while locked/stand by i figured id give it a try and restore the thing as a new phone.

My question is im not totally sure what you guys mean by restore as new phone? So when i plug it in itunes, i do a restore as new phone? Does that mean afterwards i have to import all my contacts manually? Cause since i had the iphone i have pictures added to the contacts and emails for individual contacts..

can someone enlighten me what im gonna have to add aftwards manually again?

Your contacts should re-sync, but they will no longer have a full-screen image associated with them, just a thumbnail. Everything else should sync as usual. You will lose save info for games and such, though.

yes, when you do a clean restore your phone is wiped clean. You can then go into itunes and add your contacts,photos and whatever else you want. basically what you are doing is starting fresh. You wont lose any of your information as long as it is in itunes, but you will lose any data that you have saved on games or other apps.

Uh, that's only if he synced his contacts to something.

So, BEFORE you do a restore as new:

Contacts: Sync with Outlook in Windows or Address Book on a Mac.

Notes: Sync with Outlook in Windows or Mail on a Mac.

Calendar: Sync with Outlook in Windows or iCal on a Mac.

So i dont get it, if stuff seems to get restored.. How does this vary from restoring from a backup then?

Like i seem a bit lost, basically what i dont want to lose is my contacts/notes. game saves i could care less about.. and well the Apps that are downloaded i would like to get those back onto the iphone also. What do i need to do? Just sync in itunes or do i need to go into address book (Im using a mac) and sync in there somewheres and then sync my notes individually?

And at the end where it gives me the option to setup as new or restore from backup, if i go into new. How do i get my contacts/notes back into the phone?

A backup does not contain the following:
Contacts
Calendars
Emails
Apps
Music
Videos
Photos
Ringtones
(Basically everything that you should have saved on your computer or mail service by syncing)

A backup DOES contain:
SMS Messages
Settings
All Application Settings (like saved games and app settings - however, this is partially up to the developer to implement)
Wallpaper image
Bookmarks
Calendar Events
Phone Favorites
Voicemail Messages
Notes (if not being synced with notes on your computer)
call logs, recent call list, call timers, voicemails
stocks
weather cities
camera roll photos (no other photos)
app locations/placement (on 3.0 ONLY, saves what pages and locations you kept your apps)

So what does that mean? Like why is this iphone backing up/restoring business so difficult to understand, only apple was able to reproduce something so easy once into a complicated procedure where there is 5 different variants of it..

So again, in order for me to save my CONTACTS, NOTES, CALENDAR what do i need to do? Just plug in the iphone and hit sync in itunes? Or open address book, notes and iCal and do some other sort of sync?

Okay, lets try again. Restoring as a new phone will clear everything off your iphone, all data and all settings, like it was a new iPhone. Restoring from a backup simply resets your iPhone to a previous state. Because backups preserve some settings, restoring as a new phone will fix some problems that restoring from a backup will not.

When you then sync your phone with iTunes at the end of the procedure, iTunes will re-add all your music, apps, contacts, notes, etc. previously on your iPhone (basically, anything that is normally synced by iTunes) provided that they have previously been synced with your computer. Before you do this procedure, you should go into the settings for your iPhone in iTunes and make sure everything you want to save is being synced with iTunes so that any changes you have made (apps/music downloaded directly to your phone, changes to your contacts made on your phone, etc.) will be saved on your computer. Perform a final sync just before you restore.

You will lose your Wi-Fi network settings, any changes you've made in 'Settings' on your iPhone, call logs, saved text messages, etc. Your Visual Voicemail should be redownloaded when your phone connects to the voicemail server.


This is the procedure for Restoring as a new phone:

1. Connect your iPhone to your Mac or PC and select your iPhone from the list of devices in iTunes.
2. In the Summary Tab, click on the Restore button.
3. iTunes should prompt you if you would wish to take a backup of your iPhone before restoring. Select Backup.
4. After the backup is taken select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you.
5. Once the restore process has completed your iPhone will restart and the Apple logo will appear while booting up.
6. After the restore is complete and your iPhone restarts you will see the “Connect to Activate” screen. You must continue to keep your iPhone connected to complete activation.
7. After activation is finished, iTunes will ask whether you want to "Set up as a new iPhone" or "Restore from the backup of [date]. Choose "Set up as a new iPhone."

Sorry, I was copying and pasting. The backup does not contain contacts.

The info tab in iTunes is where you tell iTunes what and where to sync stuff for the iPhone.

If you're really worried about it, you can get the App Funambol (or Google Sync) and sync the contacts online before you do all this, so you'll be sure to get them back if something goes wrong. The only thing that has kept me from using the app is that they require a phone number (but they do seem like a legit company, unlike the makers of iDrive). But no, I didn't have my contacts get erased. As always, the standard disclaimer: YMMV.

Edit: I decided to go ahead and get a Funambol acct. I just used a fictitious phone number.

Edit2: Oh, and to be safe, I selected a one way sync to their servers, so nothing comes back to bite me, if it messes up my contacts. I'd only use this if I lost all my contacts somehow. (You have the option of two-way sync, sync from server, or sync from iPhone).

Contacts are actually a real two-way sync. It won't erase the contacts on your iPhone.

Well im restoring it now as new.. im gonna do that set it up as a new phone and see tmr. If tho i think this is kind of ridiculous this exact same issue happened to me a week ago.

I think ill be calling apples consumer line and get a replacement either way

well phone is restored, i synced back my notes/contacts/calendar.

Its a lot faster now.. So we'll see how it runs now.

Whats weird also tho is sometimes this iphones battery charges faster then at other times, and this is while plugged in at the same source (ie. wall outlet)

Any ideas why thats happening?
