Restore of Time Machine from One Mac to new Mac Question

If I do a restore of a time machine backup from a MacBook Pro to a new iMac, I'm told it will work with no problems.

Considering what would probably happen if you tried this from one windows machine to another, that's an amazing capability.

I'm assuming I'd have possible "licensing" issues with the VM Windows partitions, but nothing a call to M$ wouldn't fix.

Anybody done an entire machine move using Time Machine like this?

I've restored my iMac twice using Time Machine. Pretty amazingly flawless. Takes a couple hrs with 500meg hd and 1 T external drive.

Glad you mentioned VMware Windows Partition. I pretty much lost my Windows installation from my previous VMware sessions. It's been a while - so this is a shout-out for anyone to chime in re: VMware who probably knows more than me - but I recall the actual application still there, but when I went to start my XP session it says does not exist-

That being said, I would assume you would have to install XP again. I haven't because I was crushed for time - and basically realized I didn't need XP anymore.

Hope this helps ping some brain cells in someone who has noticed the same thing... No licensing issues the first time I re-installed XP after a restore, but then again I'm not running concurrent versions on two machines.

I did it a few weeks ago.

Took a Time Machine backup, shut down my Mini, fitted a shiny new Crucial M225 SSD drive, did a restore install using Time Machine, then when everything was up and running upgraded to Snow Leopard.

Including changing the drive out, from shutdown to fully working on new drive with upgraded OS took a little under 2 hours.

Amazed how well it all went.

Would there be any issues of going from Leopard to Snow Leopard?

I have an old Macbook pro with Leopard and want to transfer all files to a new iMac with Snow Leopard.

You might want to call your local apple store or post some additional questions, but I've been told by the folks at my local apple store that there's no issues doing a time machine restore to a new PC - unlike windows which, due to the registry and other nightmares (windows licensing, for example), probably wouldn't work well..

In fact, when you first start a new PC, it actually asks you if you want to do a restore from a backup.
