I upgraded my iPhone 3GS to iOS5 today. After software upgrade, I tried to restore my data from the backup that was made at the beginning of the update process.

But I get this message: "iTunes could not restore the Iphone because the backup session failed".

After a lot of investigating, I even tried to make a fresh backup of an emtpy iPhone and restore it, but the same problem. So it seems that backup/restore is not working at all. So my iPhone is now empty (no contacts, SMS, app settings...).

I tried running iTunes as Administrator on my Windows 7, but it doesn't help.

Any suggestions?

Make sure you are on the newest version of iTunes. There are more than one version of iTunes 10.

I am on the latest version (10.5 actually). It was updated to this version prior to the iOS version update.

I found a solution. I installed iTunes on my old PC running Windows XP and copied the iTunes backup folder from my Windows 7 PC.

I was able to successfully restore the backup to my iPhone from there.
