Prior to downloading Yosemite I did a full backup of my HD on Mavericks through time machine to an external HD. I would like to restore to my previous HD and OS.

Do I simply plug in my external and restore from time machine?

thank you

Just attach your TM disk and option key bought to it and you will see a recovery screen. From there launch Disk Util and select the drive brand name at the very top of the left column (above Macintosh HD), then erase the entire disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. Then quit Disk Util and click restore. Everything be put back where it was from your last backup.
