I've recently had my 2019 MacBook Pro in for repairs and due to Coronavirus it might take a while for it to be repaired. In the meantime I'm using a 5.1 Mac Pro. My MacBook is installed with Catalina and the Mac Pro with High Sierra. So I was wondering what the best way to restore a new backup on an old Mac would be?

No Firewire in your MBP, so use CCC and then:
MBP → USB
Attach USB to MP, boot from the USB.
USB → MP.

You may want to shrink your current partition in the MP and restore from USB to the new partition in order to dual-boot it.

Literally thousands of threads about, with answers.

You'll also want to think through the next level. Will there be downgrade incompatibilities in application files (as in FCPX and Apple Mail - if applicable)? But otherwise, if the files for the apps you have can "go backwards" then I would just copy over the contents of the home directory.
- Is the backup.a clone, as in CCC or SD
- Is the backup a TM?

I haven’t got my MBP at the moment as it’s in for repairs. Just the time machine back up
